When I study hitting mechanics, I usually only study hitters who weigh under 200 lbs and hit for power.
Why?
Because there are plenty of hitters who can get away with inefficient movement because of their brute strength.
Hitters who weigh less have to move efficiently; otherwise, they won't be able to hit for power.
Today, we will look solely at the load, or what I call the gather, and whether it changes when comparing hitters who weigh under 200 lbs to those who weigh over 200 lbs.
I like to watch videos in slow motion and then at a faster frame.
It's easy to miss things if you only look at 1.
Mookie Betts Vs. Aaron Judge
5 ft 8 (180lbs) 6 ft 7 (282 lbs
Slow
Fast
Bryce Harper Vs. Fransisco Lindor
6 ft 3 (210lbs) 5 ft 11 (190 lbs)
Slow
Fast
Shohei Ohtani Vs. Corbin Carroll
6 ft 4 (210 lbs) 5 ft 10 (165 lbs)
Slow
Fast
The biggest thing that stands out to me is that hitters over 200 lbs hover over their back leg much more than those under 200 lbs.
This is why I started stating that hitters under 200 lbs must move more efficiently. They don't have the strength to overcome inefficiencies that bigger hitters do.
And I'm not saying that the hitters over 200 lbs need to 'change' or that they would be any better if they moved differently.
Once again, seeing this shows that you can't teach every hitter the same thing.
