Why Most Families Fail in College Baseball Recruiting (And How to Fix It)

Mar 13, 2025

The College Baseball Recruiting Crisis:

What Parents Must Know to Avoid Costly Mistakes

College baseball recruiting has changed dramatically in the last five years.

  • The transfer portal has slashed opportunities for high school players.
  • Showcases have become pay-to-play traps with little real recruiting impact.
  • More families than ever are wasting thousands of dollars on the wrong events.
  • Social media is filled with false promises from "gurus" who don’t actually help.

If you don’t adapt to the new recruiting landscape, your son will be left behind.

Here’s the brutal truth most families don’t want to hear:

  • Talent alone is NOT enough.
  • Good stats won’t get your son a scholarship.
  • The majority of high school players are targeting the WRONG schools.

Your son isn’t just competing against other high school players anymore. He’s competing against:

  • College transfers with 2-3 years of development
  • JUCO players with better physical tools

Coaches aren’t handing out scholarships to just anyone. They’re looking for players who fit their specific needs, roles, and system.

Does your son actually fit what they’re looking for?

Or are you chasing a dream without a real plan?

The 5 Recruiting Traps That Keep Families Stuck...

1. The Showcase Money Pit

Most showcases do not lead to real recruiting interest.

  • Coaches already know who they’re watching before the event starts.
  • If your son isn’t on a target list, he’s just another number.
  • If he doesn’t have the metrics, he won’t stand out—no matter how “skilled” he is.

The Fix: Instead of wasting money, I help families identify the right events—where their son has an actual shot at being recruited.

2. The “Looks Good in High School” Myth

Playing SS in high school? Leading your team in hitting? Great—but that doesn’t mean you project at that position in college.

  • Middle infielders need ELITE footspeed, range, and quick hands.
  • Corner infielders MUST hit for POWER (or they get moved to the OF).
  • Just because your son is “good” doesn’t mean he fits a college roster need.

The Fix: I help families understand how college coaches project players, so they don’t waste time chasing the wrong positions or schools.

3. The Transfer Portal Blindspot

Coaches used to rely on high school recruiting. Now? They’d rather grab a proven college transfer than take a gamble on a high school player.

  • If you don’t have an edge (size, velocity, elite hitting, etc.), your chances drop significantly.
  • If your son is only looking at D1, you might be ignoring better fits & real offers at other levels.

The Fix: I help players position themselves to compete in the transfer portal era, so they don’t get overlooked.

4. The New Scholarship Reality

For years, NCAA Division I baseball programs were limited to 11.7 scholarships for 35+ players, forcing coaches to divide money into partial scholarships. But that’s about to change.

  • Starting in 2025-2026, the NCAA is increasing baseball scholarships from 11.7 to 34.
  • Rosters will now be capped at 34 players, making scholarship allocation more strategic.
  • Some Power 4 schools will fully fund the increase, while mid-major programs may struggle to match it.
  • This is part of a proposed legal settlement and is awaiting final approval.

What does this mean for families?

  • More opportunities for scholarship money, but competition will remain fierce.
  • More structure to rosters—coaches won’t over-recruit as aggressively.
  • Stronger programs may dominate recruiting by offering more financial aid.

The Fix: I guide families through the scholarship & financial aid process so they understand exactly what to expect and where their son realistically fits.'

5. The “Email = Interest” Lie

Did your son get an email from a college? Exciting, right?

Not so fast.

  • 99% of college baseball emails are just marketing for camps.
  • If a coach sends a mass email, it means nothing.
  • If a coach personally calls or texts, THAT’S real interest.

The Fix: I teach players how to separate real interest from camp invites, so they stop wasting time chasing false leads.

How I Help Players Get REAL Opportunities

Here’s the deal: You can either navigate the recruiting process blindly, or you can take a smarter approach.

I work with serious families who want to get recruited without wasting time, energy, and money.

What I Do Differently:

  • Customized Recruiting Plan – I analyze your son’s strengths & weaknesses and build a targeted strategy to maximize his chances.
  • College Coach Network – I have relationships with coaches at every level and connect players with real opportunities.
  • Positioning for the Transfer Portal Era – I help your son stand out against college transfers & JUCO players so he doesn’t get overlooked.
  • Showcase & Event Strategy – I tell you exactly which events to attend (and which ones to skip) so you stop wasting money.
