D3 Baseball: How Johns Hopkins Built a Powerhouse

Dec 10, 2024

Division III baseball has never been better, and Johns Hopkins University is leading the charge.

I recently sat down with Adam Schlenoff, the recruiting coordinator for the Johns Hopkins baseball team, to get the inside scoop on this powerhouse program.

Balancing Brains and Baseball

As the 6th best university in the nation, Johns Hopkins offers a rare combination:

  • Elite education
  • Opportunity to compete for national championships

Adam emphasizes, "We're providing an experience that's truly unique in collegiate sports."

National Talent Hunt:

Unlike most D3 programs, Johns Hopkins casts a wide net:

  • National recruiting approach
  • Seeking exceptional student-athletes who excel in:
    • Baseball
    • Academics
    • Leadership

The New Face of D3 Baseball

Adam notes significant improvements in recent years:

  • Enhanced pitching quality
  • Data-driven training methods
  • D3 players now being drafted into professional baseball

The Johns Hopkins Philosophy:

Process Over Outcome

The program's focus on player development has led to impressive results:

  • Emphasis on proper mechanics and positioning
  • Set D3 record for home runs in a season
  • Attracting transfers from D1 programs

Quotes from Adam Schlenoff in this interview:

"Division III baseball now would not compete in division I baseball that I played in 2005. The level has just gotten so much better."

"We set the Division III record in home runs in 2023. We hit 114 in 56 games."

"I always make the claim, it's my job to help you find more barrels."

"We focus a lot on loading. And feel like, you know, if we can teach people to load properly in the box, then the result will sort of take care of itself."

Academic Requirements:

Prospective student-athletes face rigorous standards:

  • GPA: Average 3.93 (aim for 3.9+)
  • SAT: Middle 50% score 1480-1560 (aim for 1530-1560)
  • ACT: Average 34 (middle 50% range: 33-35)
  • Class Rank: 99% of admitted students in top 10% of class
  • Course Rigor: AP, IB, and honors classes preferred
  • Extracurriculars: Leadership and community engagement valued
  • Strong essays and recommendations crucial
